How does IPTV work? How TV gets to your screen online
How does IPTV work? Step by step: how channels reach your app over the internet, what a TV guide and Xtream Codes are and what your connection does.
You may already know what IPTV is: TV over the internet. But how does IPTV actually work? What happens between the moment you click a channel and the moment the picture appears? Here’s the whole process, step by step and without jargon.
Step 1: the channel is turned into data
A TV channel is basically a continuous stream of picture and sound. With IPTV that stream is converted into a digital format and split into small pieces of data. Those pieces are ready on servers: powerful computers that can deliver them to many viewers at once.
Step 2: your app requests the channel
When you tap a channel in your IPTV app, the app requests those pieces of data from the server. To know which channels exist and where they are, the app needs your login details. Usually these are:
- a username and password, and
- a server address (a URL).
This is called logging in with Xtream Codes. The app then loads the channel list, the TV guide (EPG) and the library of films and series by itself. An alternative is an M3U link: one long link with the channel list. Xtream Codes is usually easier. Our page on IPTV Smarters Pro shows exactly how to log in.
Step 3: the data travels over the internet
The data reaches your router through your internet provider, and from there your device over cable or Wi-Fi. This is the part you have the most influence over. A stable connection gives a smooth picture; a weak Wi-Fi signal can cause freezing. More in internet speed for IPTV.
Step 4: your device plays it
Your device puts the pieces back together and plays them. Because a few seconds are always loaded in advance (the buffer), you usually don’t notice small dips in your connection. Only when the connection is too slow for too long does the buffer run empty and the picture freeze.
Live TV, TV guide and on demand
An IPTV subscription usually has three parts:
- Live TV: channels broadcasting at that moment, just like normal TV.
- TV guide (EPG): the overview of what’s on now and next on every channel.
- On demand (VOD): films and series you start whenever you want.
With us, all three are included in every plan, together with live sport and pay-per-view events.
What does this mean for you?
Because everything goes over the internet, you don’t need a dish, cable connection or decoder. It is smart to have your home connection in good shape, though. So test it first with the free 24-hour trial, on your own TV and your own Wi-Fi.
Frequently asked questions
How does IPTV work without a decoder?
An app takes over the job of the decoder. It fetches the channels over the internet and plays them on your TV, phone or computer.
What are Xtream Codes?
Xtream Codes is a way of logging in to IPTV apps: you enter a username, password and server address, and the app then loads the channels, TV guide and films itself.
Does IPTV use a lot of data?
Yes, video uses a lot of data. At home on a fixed connection without a data cap that's no problem. On a mobile plan with a data bundle it can add up quickly.
